20 Things You Hear In College
Collegefession.

College is simultaneously awesome and awful. Half the time you love what you do and can't wait to work in your field. The other half of the time you're entertaining thoughts about dropping out of college and becoming a hobo. Here's some things you've probably either said, or heard, when talking to college students.

1. Is it too late to withdraw from this class?

I know everyone has wondered this at least once during their college years.

2. I think I'm just gonna drop out of college.

If you haven't entertained this thought, you're lying.

3. Is it acceptable to wear the same shirt I wore yesterday?

Yes. Because you're Monday/Wednesday/Friday people don't know about your Tuesday/Thursday life.

4. Five more minutes!

Five more minutes of sleep won't completely disrupt my schedule, right?

5. Why do I have to wear pants?

Ah, yes. The eternal question.

6. I'm not going to my 9:25 and you can't make me.

You can skip class every once in a while. Just don't make it a habit.

7. I don't wanna go to class

No one does, bro.

8. Will there be snacks at this event?

This will determine how many people show up and how long they will say. Once the food is gone, I'm gone.

9. My prof is always late anyways.

You're not late as long as you get there before the Prof does.

10. We only have to wait 10 minutes before we can leave, right?

This rule is always confusing. Just remember, 10 minutes for Professors and 15 for Doctors. Now you just have to remember whether it's "Professor Smith" or "Doctor Smith."

11. Did we have homework?

If we did, I obviously didn't do it.

12. Can we just watch a movie today?

This one is probably more common among the film major classes. But it still applies to everyone.

13. I have time for coffee.

There is always time for coffee. Always.

14. I'll just wing it.

Presentations are really hard to memorize, after all.

15. It's bedtime.

Don't be deceived. Once that clock hits 11pm, I am out like a light.

16. One more episode.

Of course, my 11pm rule doesn't apply during a binge watch session. This show is just too good!

17. We have a test???

This is probably one of the most terrifying moments of your life. Hopefully the answer is, "not until next week."

18. What day is it?

This determines a lot. Like what class you're going to, or if you have a meeting.

19. I like your Chacos.

This is especially common at Asbury University. But hey, maybe other campuses have a chaco obsession. They are comfy.

20. Why did I take an 8am?

I don't know, but you should probably reevaluate your life decisions.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
