Life’s stressors can be distracting. With all the hustle and bustle, we forget to thank ourselves for the little things we accomplish. To thank others comes naturally, but remembering to appreciate ourselves often needs to be reminded. Our capability to be the controllers of our universe allows us to positively impact others and should be met with gratitude. Gratitude is proven to benefit physical and psychological well being while improving metal strength and personal self-esteem.

Starting with yourself, it is good to acknowledge the entirety of everything good that you do. Appreciating the work you have put in will help motivate you through the work that still needs to be done. So give yourself a pat on the back because just being you is important.

Here are some everyday things that you might forget to thank yourself for:

For getting up every morning

It isn’t always easy crawling out of the comfort of your bed, so the fact that you do it everyday is a small accomplishment you are allowed to be proud of.

For taking on daily responsibilities

Another thing you might forget to thank yourself for, is having the courage to take on the day’s challenges. It can be hard doing things we have to do and might not want to do.

For continuously growing as an individual

Progress is something we rarely commend ourselves for. Even when we do not realize it, our individuality is blooming and our growth is unstoppable.

For being open to learning new things

Having the ability to learn is a blessing. Thank yourself for taking advantage of this capability as it is worth cherishing.

For having something you enjoy doing or are passionate about

Being passionate is often what drives us to achieve. Thank yourself for finding interests that motivate you and bring you happiness.

For having a few close friends

As long as you keep a few close friends, you will never be alone. Thank yourself for building relationships, being a good friend and having good ones in return.

For bouncing back from days that weren’t as great as you hoped

Getting through the tough days and always looking forward to the good ones. Appreciate the strength you have to see past the bad days.

For saying hello to people on the street

Having common courtesy can only bring positivity to you and those around you. Thank yourself for the small acts of kindness you share.

For catering to your bodies needs

Thank yourself for the times you have listened to your body. Doing what you need for both your physiological and psychological self.

For forgiving people that have done you wrong

Having the strength to forgive is something to be proud of. It is not easy letting go of anger and allowing yourself to move forward.

For always striving for happiness

Thank yourself for doing the things that make you happy. After all, happiness is the ultimate goal and you are the only one that can create it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
