15 Things I Wish I Knew While In High School
Morgan Ward

While being in High School, all students think that they know everything. That's not the case most of the time. High Schoolers are still teens. Teens are just now having firsts and making mistakes. there is no possible way that they know everything that is going on in High School, inside and outside the classroom.

1. Dress for yourself and not anyone else

Dressing for anyone besides yourself will just hurt you, and no one else. In High School everyone is finding their sense of self and own swag.

2. It's ok to take a year off if you don't know if you want to go to college

College isn't for everyone. Not everyone wants to go right into continuing education after finishing 13-14 years of nonstop education. In society, teens are forced to go and make life changing and life impacting decisions. It is a scary process and sometimes you just need time to make a decision and for through different processes life brings along.

3. Never neglect your mental health

Mental health is something that people can take for granted. Having a good mindset is something that is so important. With being a teen, many things are learned, and drawbacks can occur. Teens can experience anxiety and depression. It's normal and frustrating but with every action, there is a greater reaction.

4. Show your school spirit

There are multiple people in the same area under one mascot, one team. Who wouldn't want to be a part of the fun? Going to football games under the Friday night lights is sometimes the highlight of people's High School careers.

5. You will make new friends after High School and that's okay

After High School people flow down different paths. Even if school didn't end, you would be finding new friends.

6. You will learn so much about yourself after graduation

After graduation people will realize that who you were in High School won't matter once you get outside of High School.

7. Take pictures, you will want the memories

Looking back at pictures when you go through your emo phase, and all your other phases, can be fun and exciting to look at. Pictures captures memories and how much you have changed and grown through the High School years.

8. Saving your money is valuable

Saving money is such hard thing to do. You will be thanking yourself later for saving your money though. Your money that you are saving could go to so much use later on. That money could be going towards a night out on the town, treating yourself, a spring break trip and so much more.

9. When you go to college, no one cares who you were before

Everyone is in their own bubble in High School with people's opinions coming left and right about a person. Once yo enter the "real world" the bubble can get popped. People find their new identity or get more comfortable with who they were and are ready to show the world for good.

10. Broken hearts get put back together

Most of the time High School relationships don't work out. High school is a fishbowl and the world is the ocean. There are so many fish in the sea. Just because this person was there "just then" doesn't mean they want to be a part of your "right now" or "coming soon". Crushes are called crushes for a reason. It hurts when the other person doesn't feel the same way and you heart literally can feel like it's crushed, but I promise it won't be this way forever.

11. Get involved

Getting involved givens you so many opportunities. Future job opportunities, better school opportunities, and a chance to make more friends. By being involved in High School you will have memories to look back and laugh at. These memories will then be shared with so many more people that cross your path in life.

12. It's ok to fail

Failing will help you to realize that not everything is perfect in the world. Failing is about learning all across the way.

13. Don't take your siblings for granted

Sure, your siblings can get very annoying. Don't think this for too long because these are your lifetime friends.

14. Make time for your family, especially your grandparents

Grandparents always have the best stories. As we are living young, and in out own little teen world, we don't realize that they are getting older and lonely. They love to hear about our day and what is happening in our lives. It also helps them relive their happy days.

15. Thank your parents, for everything

If you decide to go away for school, thank your parents! Spend time with them. You have lived with them for 18 years, they will miss you, and you will miss them. They were the ones that helped you take your first steps and they will still be there when you fall down and put you back on your feet.

High School can be a great time but it is also very scary and nerve-wracking at times. High School eventually ends. Having positive memories and good times will get you through the bad. Getting older and making new memories is a great thing that some people take for granted. I for sure know that I won't take my High School experiences for granted.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
