You made it! You're a high school graduate with a brand new diploma ready to take on the next chapter of your education: College.
Some of you, I'm sure, are beyond excited to see what college brings for you. Everyone tells you that freshman year is the best time of your life, simply because they're completely right. It's the first time that you're able to have a sense of major responsibility with the outcome of what degree you'll strive to earn. However, the newest experience that most of you will endure is living on campus. It's your first time away from home, if you plan to live on campus, and it'll be the first time that some of you will be living with a roommate.
After completing my freshman year of college living on campus, here's what I wish I knew:
1. Bring a lot of fans
Especially if your dorm doesn't have air conditioning, do yourself a favor and bring as many as you can. Your dorm may be small, and a small dorm with hot air isn't too pleasant of an environment to be in.
2. Bring snacks
I guarantee you that you'll want to snack on something after the dining hall closes, especially for needed bursts of energy for late night study sessions.
3. Don't bring a ton of t-shirts
I cannot stress this one enough. You will accumulate so many random t-shirts throughout the year. Trust me.
4. Go to events
From midnight cereal bars to spontaneous silent discos, please try to go to the events on campus. The way your freshman year will turn out depends on what you do during it!
5. Money
Keep some spare cash with you for late night take-out orders. They'll happen for sure.
6. Establish rules with your roommate
Tell each other what you like and dislike, and tell each other when you like to go to bed and wake up in the morning. If something bothers you, tell them immediately instead of holding a grudge. You don't have to be best friends with your roommate, but it's important to have a healthy relationship with him or her.
7. Get on your RA's good side
I'm not saying to suck up to your RA, but don't be a total jerk around him or her. They're the ones who are in charge of everyone in your hall, and you don't want to be written up over something trivial.
8. Make friends
This is pretty self-explanatory, and living on campus leads to so many opportunities to make more friends! Be friendly with the people in your residence hall, and in your classes!
9. Go to class
Your professor won't message you and ask you why you missed class, and your parents aren't there to wake you up in the morning. You'll have to do this by yourself, and it's so important to not skip class. After all, you're the one paying for them.
10. Call your parents
They're sure to be thinking about you, so give them a call to assure them that you're doing fine!
