It’s the beginning of June, and every student who goes to school somewhere near the coast knows what that means: hurricane season. Hurricanes are serious natural disasters that occur all over the world, which are broken down into 5 categories based on the severity of the storm. For those who live through this season every year there are only two categories: the party storm, and the get out as fast as you can storm. With the NOAA predicting a busier storm season than normal this year, here are a few thoughts we’ve all thought when hearing a hurricane is coming.
- It’s storm season, I should probably actually watch the news.
- It’s just a little rain, why is everyone so worried?
- The weatherman has this thing predicted to go 20 different ways we’re fine.
- It’s getting windy, should I call my mom?
- Mom says not to leave, I’ll be fine.
- Yay! No school!
- Hurricane parties everywhere!
- The lights are flickering, but it’s fine.
- No power.
- My phone is almost dead.
- Now what am I going to do…
- Where are all the candles? I can’t see!
- Okay, the house is lit but now I’m hungry.
- How do I cook, I can’t use the microwave?
- Why am I not more prepared?
- Okay, it’s fine. I’m fine.
- I just need to go to sleep everything will be okay, no need to be scared.
- The dog needs to go out… she can pee in the house I’m not going out there.
- I think the rain is letting up.
- I survived! We survived!
- Okay, I’m not going to be that unprepared again…
- Repeats steps 1-21
Don’t be unprepared this hurricane season. Making sure you have plenty of water, food, and medical supplies is essential. Some cities can lose power for weeks for even the smallest storm. Plan or you will be scrambling once the storm passes and hope Publix or Walmart has supplies left. Good luck and be smart this season!
