Things We Love About Tennessee
Meghan O'Brien

I may be a little biased because I’m from the volunteer state, but nothing could be truer when it is said that Tennessee is one of the greatest states in the Bible belt. From the Mississippi River to the Great Smokies, you’ll find out there’s more to us that meets the eye. You may not know much about Tennessee, but there are so many things to love.

1.Home of the Great Smokies

Tennessee is most known for the beautiful stretch of the Appalachian mountains where some people still reside. Take a visit to Cade’s Cove or Clingman’s Dome and take in the beauty of East Tennessee in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Don’t forget to take a dip in the Little Pigeon River.

2.“Rocky Top, You’ll Always Be, Home Sweet Home to Me”

There isn’t a Tennessean that doesn’t at least know a few lines of this ballad. What could be better? You’ll get goosebumps just hearing Pride of the Southland band playing this.

3.MoonPies

Right smack dab in Chattanooga, MoonPie was born. Who doesn’t have the memory of going down to the country store in the farm truck and getting a MoonPie with your granddaddy?

4.Grand Ole Opry

There is nothing more special than going to the Grand Ole Opry for the first time. Going in, you feel the pride of being a Tennessean even before the music starts. It’s the longest running live radio broadcast in the world! How cool is that?

5.Jack Daniels

Jack wasn’t his real name, but that’s what you know when you see that square bottle and black label. Started in Lynchburg, Tennessee. You may not know where Tennessee is, but you probably know Jack.

6. Peyton Manning and Tennessee Football

Ya’ll don’t forget where he played football in college. No matter if you're a die-hard Vols fan or the occasional watcher, you always know when it's football time in Tennessee! GBO!

7. Dolly Parton

Dolly will always hold a special place in our hearts as being a Tennessee woman. She’s been a singer, actress and a businesswoman. She’s a true humanitarian who takes pride in helping her home state with things like the Reading Railroad.

8. Reelfoot Lake

If you’ve never heard the story, you should probably look it up because it’s quite fascinating. A whole lake created by a series of earthquakes. Earthquakes so powerful they made the Mississippi run backwards. Go fishing and learn about it sometime.

9. Being a part of the BIble belt

I saved the best for last! Tennessee is fifth most religious state in the whole country, and we are strong in our faith.

As you can see, Tennessee has a lot more than meets the eye. Yall come on, and stay with us awhile.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
