Things I Want My Long Distance Friends To Know

To my fraternal twin, my lady, my Emma

Things I Want My Long Distance Friends To Know
Shelby Walker

These are the people that make your day a little brighter. You go to them for advice and to rant about anything and everything. They are your girl soul mates. One exception, they live in a different state or even across the country. Even though you are so far away from me, I still love you the same. Here are some things I want the ladies that I love to know:

1) Thank you for your friendship

From the very first second we met, we clicked. Whether that was over Facebook looking for roommates, at orientation, or in chemistry lab, our vibes were thrivin'. As we became closer and closer, you were always there for me when I couldn't make decisions, to go to the dining hall with me (at least 50 times a day), Walmart dates, and going to the gym with me. Each one of you made my days brighter.

2) Thank you for always being my date everywhere

Whether it was to the Birmingham malls, Walmart, Jim N' Nicks or to Lakeside/Fresh Foods, I always had you by my side. Thank you for taking me meet your family and letting me have brothers for the first time in my life! Thank you for our "Friendsgiving" before we left on Thanksgiving break. Thank you for always going to get fried pickles (the way we say it).

3) Thank you for accepting me as I am

This one is a big thank you. Thank you for loving all of my quirks and dealing with me on a daily basis. And thank you so much for going out with me in public whether I was looking like a crouton or my usual 50 shades of grey outfit when it was cold (all grey everything for those of you picturing someone really bad).

4) I hope that you are nothing but successful

I know each and every one of you will go so far in life. I know how hard you all work because most of the time we were grinding in the library together. I want to continue to watch you kill it at life and be the successful people I know you will be.

5) Don't ever forget how much I love you

You know how much I love you and am so grateful for all of you. Each one of you have touched my life and changed me for the better.

6) Thank you for all the laughs and memories

Oh lord. I don't even know where to start on this one. You kept me constantly laughing and I don't know what I would have done without that.

7) Thank you for being you.

Thank you for being the amazing people that you are. Thank you for accepting me into your lives. Thank you for calling me at 11PM asking to use my shower since your hot water was broken. Thank you for giving me a giant stack of Oreo's during finals week. Thank you for always stopping at the doorway of my bedroom and cutting a rug. Half way thank you for forcing me to listen to country sometimes. It's the little things that I will always cherish.

You ladies mean the world to me and it's the worst that we still can't spend every day together, but I will forever be grateful for the days we did have together. And the days that will come! You stay you. I believe in every single one of you. To Erika, Lindsey and Taylor.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
