As I wrap up my senior year of band camp, I am feeling pretty nostalgic. I have to force myself to not think about this point next year because I know I will not be with my band family and I need to enjoy every moment of the present.
So, since it's on my mind, I've decided to create a list of things you know to be true if you were ever in marching band:
1. Taking care of yourself is a must
I'm not saying marching band is a sport, but it's definitely a physical activity. This means you must stay hydrated, eat well enough, and have the endurance to keep going-- even on the longest, hottest days.
2. Sunscreen is not an option, it's a necessity
Every year it seems like there is another member who starts the week with pale skin and ends it bright red. Even a lot of people who usually tan end up with a burn. In order to save yourself from the annoyance of dry and peeling skin and just wear sunscreen. Trust me, nobody wants to hear you whine about it.
3. Every single person is important
It doesn't matter if you're playing the first part, or the second part; it doesn't matter if you're an experienced marcher, or if this is your first time ever marching. If you are in the band, you matter. If you're not there it directly impacts the show and other members of the band.
4. Uniformity is so important
There is a time and place to be different-- marching band is not one of those places. Not only do you need to be wearing a uniform during performances, you also need to know your step offs, moves, and how each correlates with the music.
5. It takes a lot of patience and determination, but it's worth it
Unless you're some sort of prodigy, there are going to be aspects of marching band that don't come easily to you. The worst thing you can do is give up because the struggle is well worth it when you get to perform the show.
