Things To Look Forward To Leading Up To Spring Break

We could all use some motivation.

Spring break is only a few short weeks away, and I think almost all students would agree that it is much needed. I personally enjoy making a list of things that I can look forward to help pull me through these next weeks.

1. My Pets

I think every student can agree that the best thing about spring break is being able to go home and see your pets! I know my favorite part is when I pull up in the driveway and my mom let’s both my dogs come running out to my car. Even if you don’t get to go home, you have the free time to visit shelters and play with their animals (another pastime of mine!).

2. My Family

Coming from a close-knit family, I enjoy being back home. It’s nice to be able to do the simple things again like go grocery shopping with my Mom, visit my grandparents with my Dad, or babysit my nephew. Overall, they are probably one of the biggest perks to going home.

3. Friends

Similar to family and pets, it’s just nice to have time to reconnect with old friends, and if you’re lucky enough, take a trip with some of them!

4. Sleep

The first night I’m home I’m usually in bed by nine and won’t wake up until ten the next day. Trying to keep up with schoolwork can really limit your sleep, and yes a majority of my break will likely be spent in bed.

5. Turning in my Homework

Spring break is a time of relief, but the week leading up to it is usually filled with papers, exams, and projects. While I’m not a fan of the stress, I feel accomplished turning each assignment in and use that to motivate me as I reach Spring break.

6. No Work

While turning in all my homework is a nice motivator, so is the thought of having no homework for two weeks. Unless you are stuck in a course that does assign homework (I know I have homework over break), but being able to take a day or two off without completely falling behind is still an added bonus.

7. Going Outside

I feel as a student that I never get to spend enough time outside. Most of my hours are spent studying and writing, so when it comes to breaks I really try to get outside as much as possible. Basically, if I’m not asleep, chances are I’m outside.

8. Catching Up on Hobbies

Schoolwork makes it near impossible to keep up with hobbies. Breaks provide some time to just relax, knit a scarf or paint a picture again for fun - while not feeling guilty for not doing homework.

9. We’re halfway done

Spring break usually falls about halfway through the semester, so if you don’t look forward to any of these things, just remember you’re at least halfway done with the semester.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?

For the average 20-something, life moves pretty fast. You’ve got classes, friends, relationships, jobs, family, and whatever else we overcommit ourselves with. I probably should have learned to say no to adding more to my schedule a long time ago, but instead here are 11 things that can be more helpful than coffee.
