I've been working retail for about 2 and a half months now, and I average anywhere between 16 to 18 hours a week. I haven't been in retail for long, but I've learned plenty while working in it.
There will be people who are rude and cause a scene just to get their way.
At my place of work, this doesn’t happen too often but I can’t say that this has never happened. Some people lose all respect for others when they don’t get their way, but you just have to learn how to deal with it.
The people you work with can really make you excited to go to work or dread going to work.
I love the people I work with. Your positivity is contagious so if you give off the vibe that you’re happy to be there, people will like having you there and like working with you. Where I work, there have been days where the customers aren’t nice, I haven’t made any sales, etc. but I’m still having a good time at work because of who I am working with.
Just because you work in retail, doesn’t mean you’ll get super good discounts.
As an employee I get a 30% discount which isn’t bad, but for those that don’t retail usually think the discount is a lot higher. Don’t get my wrong some places give their employees over a 60% discount or let them stack discounts, which is awesome but not every place is like that.
