5 Things To Do if You're Staying In Oxford This Summer

Summer is finally here. Hallelujah. I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure I have the most fun and relaxed lifestyle possible here in Oxford. I’ve heard great things about spending the summer here, and I’ve come up with a list of things that I plan on doing in my time off.

1. Pool Szn

Retreat, Highland Square, wherever. I'll be there. Hell, I might even make it my mission to hit every pool in Oxford. When it gets to be 200 degrees out like it always is here in the summer, it is THE move. There’s nothing better than packing a cooler, grabbing a speaker, and getting your squad together for a chill day by the pool.

2. Baseball games

Between the iconic beer showers, the Rebs top 10 ranking, and the best environment in college baseball, there are plenty of reasons to visit Swayze to see the Rebs play. Also, Ole Miss will be hosting a regional (and possibly even a Super Regional), so we’ll likely have the chance to see some other great teams play as well.

3. Basketball at the bars

The beginning of the NBA playoffs may have seemed like a bit of a foregone conclusion, but now things are heating up. The Rockets-Warriors series looks like it’s going to be great, and LeBron is playing the best that he has at any point in his career. If you’re into basketball like I am, watching the action unfold in one of Oxford’s many bars is an ideal way to spend a summer evening.

4. Make a trip to Memphis

Just a little over an hour away from Oxford, Memphis has plenty to get into. If you're looking for somewhere to start, there's the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid and Beale Street. After that, I'd suggest grabbing some real-deal, authentic Memphis barbecue from one of the many local places that give Memphis the reputation of being one of the best barbecue cities in the country.

5. Sardis Lake

A chill day on the lake is similar to a chill day at the pool, just a little more rowdy since you’re mostly hanging out with people you know already instead of being in a more social situation like you are at the pool. If you’ve got a friend with a boat, Sardis is a great place for tubing, fishing, and everything else that typically goes down on a boat. With the right crew, a day on Sardis is one to remember.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
