Before the inevitable DC winter threatens to put an end to all of our wonderful (albeit humid) summer weather, you need to make sure that you make the most of all the District has to offer. During this summer, I have compiled a few of the need-to-see spots and activities everyone should take advantage of before the summer ends and snow locks them away for another six months.
For students new and old on the Hilltop, you can't miss these sites!
1. Hiking at Billy Goat Trail
This wonderful little oasis is nestled along the Potomac River just 30 minutes east of downtown DC. Akin to its name, the trek features rock formations and ledges where hikers take on the challenge of scaling the rocks like the animals of fame. Also featured is Great Falls Park, where beautiful rapids provide a glimpse of nature's beauty thousands of years in the making. With its convenient location near DC, a quick car ride can take you to this hike, so make sure you get there before the snow freezes the rocks!
2. Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
A summer staple in DC, Jazz in the Garden is a complimentary concert experience open to all members of the DC community. Conveniently located in the Sculpture Garden of the Smithsonian Museum, Jazz in the Garden happens every Friday evening and features a new musical group every week, providing live music you can't help but dance to. Join the DC citizens as they fill the lawn of the garden, lounging on blankets and enjoying delicious picnics as they listen to the music. And if that's not enough, the sangria that can be purchased simply can't be beat. Hurry up and catch the Jazz—the last show is August 28!
3. Shop with the Vendors at DC Farmers Markets
Nothing says summer better then fresh, organic foods and snacks. And there's no better way to get the freshest foods than at DC's Farmers Markets. With multiple locations across the district, you can join hundreds of local vendors and sample fresh fruit, cheeses, vegetables, and a variety of meals. Grab some savory empanadas in Dupont Circle or basil goat cheese in Glover Park, and enjoy it all in the sunny DC weather. The Farmers Markets end soon, so check out the schedule here.
These are just a few spots that won't be available much longer, so make sure you check these out while you can!
