1. Not going to bed until two or three in the morning.
While in college it’s considered“weird if you’re asleep before 11 p.m., the real world shuts down at 10 p.m. (well, at least the suburbs do).
2. Sleeping in until 11 a.m. or noon.
Probably a contributing factor to staying up so late (early?). Parents have quite a bit of tasks to complete throughout the normal course of a day, and even though we don’t, they consider it laziness.
3. Watching an entire season of Netflix in one weekend.
Again, parents will equate this to laziness when in fact, it takes dedication and perseverance and should be rewarded.
4. Eating at weird times.
Say you wake up at 12 noon, that means breakfast is then at a regular lunch time, so dinner is lunch and that midnight snack of an entire bag of Cool Ranch Doritos that no one can know about, is actually dinner. So, ha! I am eating three square meals a day, Mom.
5. Being on your phone all day.
Cue the “what are you looking at?” and “who are you talking to?” questions. “No one, Mom. I’m taking a quiz to figure out if my star sign lines up with my spirit animal.”
6. Ordering things online.
I order things online far more frequently than someone with my bank account should. Don’t try this one over break -- “It’s going to be Christmas tomorrow!” “I know Mom, but there’s no way anyone got me this Tom Haverford quote canvas and I need it.”
7. Wearing leggings and a T-shirt every day.
Surprisingly, the dress code of college does not match up with the real world's. Sure, wearing a XL shacker shirt to church may not have been appropriate, but it was sure as hell comfortable.
8. Drinking.
Whether you do it or not in college, you can’t tell me you don’t feel a pang of jealousy when your grandpa opens the Bouchaine 2010 Pinot Noir. If you have cool parents who let you drink whenever when you’re home, don’t think the rules don’t change for you. College drinking and real world drinking are not the same. Sure your parents may be cool, but don’t think for one second they’re going to be cool with you taking six shots as a pre-game before leaving with a Nalgene bottle full of their wine.
Overall, enjoy your time on break. And look forward to regaining freedom when you get back to campus.
