As I sit in the middle seat riding home from my dad and grandma's house after our thanksgiving celebration, my nephew peacefully asleep to my right and my younger sister to my left, I can't help but come up with a mental list of things I am thankful for. Things like the fact that I have the amazing opportunity to spend this holiday with my family, that we have the finances to travel and eat a decent meal. I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to go to college and vote and drive. Thankful that I have the freedom of choice on whatever decision I need to make. I'm thankful for my dog and my hamster. I'm thankful that I got to go to India and it broke me but through the years it has made me stronger and smarter. Thankful that God always has had his hand on my life, from the time I was dying in the hospital after being born with so many birth defects it would make your head spin and most would give up, to now, making decisions for my future at 20 years old. Thankful I get to write freely. I'm thankful that I have lived 20 years. I will be 21 in January even though the doctor's said I was only going to live to age 14. I'm thankful that I have scars all over my stomach because I have learned to love myself. I found love for my scars, new founded confidence and help some others accept their own differences too. To love what makes them different. I'm thankful that my sisters, niece and nephew are sleeping peacefully. I'm thankful that the weather changed and the sun rises and sets. I'm thankful that birds sing and the wind blows and the smell of flowers. I'm thankful that I got to visit New York and see wicked live. Thankful I've made mistakes because I've learned something from each one of them. I'm thankful that one day I will be able to meeting my twin sister face to face in heaven who Is probably laughing with God or dancing with a angels rignt now. Im thankful for everyone who has guided and supported and prayed for me throughout all my years. I'm thankful for my heroes. Thankful that my favorite food was invented. Thankful that there is no limit to what all of us can learn or achieve. Thankful that there is help for anyone who may need it. I'm thankful that if I mess up today I get another chance tomorrow. Im thankful that I get to drink clean water everyday and have clothes on my back and a meal three times a day plus snacks in between if I want. I'm thankful for the way the boy with disabilities smiles at me every time he crosses the street to get to his car when I pick up my younger sister from school. I'm thankful for the way my neiece and nephew say my name so cute when they see me or how my dog always wants me as soon as I walk through my door or that I have parents who love me unconditionally. I'm just really thankful and I hope you are too.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
