Things I Will Miss While Studying Abroad

Leaving the country can be pretty hard.

In around 90 days, I will be on a plane out of the United States, and all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to a completely new, yet still similar, place. I'm already anticipating the new discoveries and new things I will see while studying in London, but while there, I know I'm going to love it way too much. Then I got thinking: What if I didn't think about things I'll miss, but something I could look forward to coming home to? Well, you're looking at those thoughts right now.

1. My family

Of course, you probably knew I was going to say that. But it's true. With all this technology and ways to communicate with each other nowadays, it wouldn't be that hard to miss them. I'll be gone for four months, and it's like any other semester here at school. Except there's a difference between a three hour drive and an almost eighteen hour plane ride. Plus, it's a whole new country. Of course I'm going to miss the familiarity of home. But when I come home, I'll get to share all the adventures I had while studying abroad. I'll tell them about what I learned, what I saw and what I did. And I know for sure that they will be at home waiting for me.

2. My friends

It's the last week of the semester, and it's really hard knowing that I won't be here next semester. I'll miss seeing them in the caf during meals, walking down caf lane or just about anywhere on campus. But what's helping me is that my friends and I will always be on different paths, and I will get to see them again the semester I return. Each of us will have grown in so many different ways, and we'll have brand new stories to tell each other. It's definitely worth it.

3. My church

Both my hometown church and my church here in San Diego. I recently attended my last service for a while at the church I go to here. I'll miss hanging out with the amazing group of both college students and the one's who lead us to Jesus. But the best part is, most of them will be there when I come back. It's one I can look forward to. I'll get to tell them about the church I found while studying abroad, as well as share the growth I've had since I left, and I know that they will want to hear it all. Well, most of it anyway.

4. Living in San Diego

The beach, digging my toes in the sand, stepping in the ocean, In-N-Out, the amazing weather, Point Loma, wearing flip flops and a lot more. I'll be back, and it will definitely still be here when I return to the United States.

So that's about it. There's bound to be a lot more, but it doesn't really matter at the moment. I know I will have so much fun while studying abroad, and I can't wait until I leave. It's a new type of adventure!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
