Five Things I Realized About College

Here are a few of the things I learned about during my first year of school.

Everyone always asks what did you realize when you got to college. Well besides many all nighters, procrastination is a bad idea, honors seminars are weird, so many fun activities to do, and dorms suck. I wanted to name five things I realized that were a little different from the usual don't procrastinate and lecture about how you must study.

1. Endless time was imaginary.

Every tells you in high school you will have so much free time in college. Hahaha, they are lying to you. Yes your schedule is more flexible than high school was, and sometimes you can choose your schedule in college. There are some classes though that are only at a certain time so you may have no choice but to have a 7:30am class. Also you should probably have job while in school to help build your resume. Which will require some of your time. There are organizations you will want to be apart of, and you will use your free time for those. Also you are going to be studying a lot. I thought IB caused sleepless nights in high school, but honestly college is worse at times. When it comes to midterms, essays, or finals you maybe up all night. People who have endless amounts of time are obviously doing something wrong cause well for one you have at minimum 12 hours of classes weekly. Being super busy is not a bad thing though just means your really working really hard.

2. Ramen is your best friend.

Yes you hate it, but when your so tired from walking all over campus, and studying for that impossible exam it is so easy to make. Also it is cheap so you can buy all different kinds of ramen. That way you have a variety to eat. Again all it takes is hot water so instant food. I never thought I would eat this much ramen in my life, but it happens.

3. The importance of a raincoat.

Yes it becomes essential for your wardrobe. I have no idea how many times I was glad I had it in my bag because it started it raining randomly. If you are from Oklahoma like myself you can agree about its unpredictable crazy weather like random rain that causes flash floods.

4. Headphones

I wore out two pairs in one year because I used the so much. I wore mine while I walked across campus to classes. Also if you decide to go ride your bike or run they will be nice to have. Number one reason I love my headphones, was some people do not understand the library is a quiet space.

5. Bicycle

Yes you have to worry about people stealing your bike. Yes I had someone take mine, but it was awesome while I had it. It was easy to go from one side of campus to another in minutes. Ultimately it means you can sleep in late, and still make it to class on time. Also if you have ten minutes to get to your next class well if you have a bicycle then don't worry. Make sure your bicycle is secure or else someone is going to steal it from you. You may think no one would want your bicycle, but someone will steal it. Don't be late to class because some professors take attendance grades, and will deduct points if your late.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
