12 Things Only People Who Did Mock Trial Understand

Being on mock trial was the most rewarding experience of my high school career. It not only inspired me to go to law school, it taught me a lot about myself as well. It takes a lot of dedication to be on a mock trial team and for four years I gave it my all. Without a team at my college I find myself missing all the things that make mock trial, mock trial. No one can really understand the mock life unless they've lived it.

1. Wanting to object in everyday conversation

Objection, your honor, relevance! I do not care about what this person is saying to me right now.

2. You feel emotionally attached to your mock trial business attire

You felt like you could take over the world in those clothes and you knew you looked that way too.

3. When you have to rewrite and memorize a new closing the week before competition

Because for some reason every year, without fail, your coach will decide last minute that he hates everything about it.

4. "Sorry, can't. I have practice"

This line isn't reserved for athletes.

5. Not sleeping during the competition days

Leaving directly from school at 3:00 and not getting back from the courthouse until 1:00am and then doing it all over again tomorrow? No pain, no gain.

6. When the judge is always biased towards the other team

"Oh, hey Billy so nice to watch your trial. I just got back from having lunch with your father, what a great guy. Okay, let's get started."

7. When your objection gets overruled when it should have been sustained

You argued it perfectly and opposing council knows it, too.

8. Having no mercy when cross examining a witness

The more scared of you they are the better.

9. The agonizing wait to see if you made finals

Because you know your term deserves it.

10. The celebration if you do

It definitely calls for some dancing lobsters.

11. Going through withdrawals when season is over

You just can't help that you miss it so much.

12. Your team is your family

You and your mock trial team went through all of the highs and lows together. They have seen you at your bitter worst and most competitive. They have become your mentors and mentees. The mock trial experience could not have been the same without them.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
