As early as our junior year in high school, my best friend and I would talk about where we wanted to go to school after graduation. Our senior year, we set our sights on two of the same schools, but when we weren't accepted to any similar campuses, our fate was decided. We were going to be separated. And not only separated, but nine hours separated, with her going to Chico State and me going to UC San Diego. Moving to the two opposite sides of the state has been different, but here are a few things we still do, regardless of distance.
1. We keep each other updated on gossip. Always.
"Today, Veronica from my Intro to Biology class told Tyler that Jamie said that Michael was talking to Samantha." Do I know who any of those people are? Of course not, they go to Chico. But what does that matter? I'm still gonna hear about it. Even gossip from our hometown that we learn about through Twitter and all of that. We keep each in the know pretty much.
2. We support each other's new endeavors.
When my best friend joined a sorority, I supported her. And when she changed her major, I supported her. And she does the same for me. Even from different ends of the state, we encourage each other to branch out and try different things on our respective campuses.
3. We tell each other the stupidest little things. For pretty much no reason.
When I go to the library and I find a prime table to work at, she knows. Why does she know? I don't know, I just feel the urge to text her and be like "tfw you find the perfect table." Like, it just seems normal. "When payday is this week >" is also a pretty accurate one.
4. We send each other lame "I miss you" texts.
Yes, lame. Not a two paragraph "Wow I love you, you're my soulmate" texts. But literally "Hay, I miss u" texts.
5. We help each other make decisions.
Just the other day, my best friend texted me and said, "Is this ugly?" It's just a best friend thing.
6. We are still best friends, even if we don't talk every day.
With both of us having jobs, class, relationships, friendships and organization affiliations at our schools, it's understandable that we don't talk every day. But we know that we will always be there for the other if times are tough at school. And when we do get to talk to each other, it's something to appreciate.
Rereading this article makes us sound like a really sappy, typical best friend relationship but we're really far from that... Whoops. Oh well. Sorry, Grace. Love u fam.
