This past week at Wartburg college was Fall Break. As most of my fellow students trudged out to their cars and home Wednesday afternoon, I curled up for a weekend alone.
I know it may sound terrible to some of you more social people, but for me, this was bliss. Four days to listen to music, read, knit, and catch up on TV.
But to lay in my bed and do that all break seemed pathetic. So when cleaning my room, I finally unpacked my last few boxes and found the solution: The window sill.
See my room of the apartment/dorm had a ledge on the inside of the window where I had been storing the last few boxes of sweatshirts and such, but once I cleaned it off; I realized that it would be the perfect spot to make a nest for myself.
So as I looked over campus and enjoyed my weekend alone, I realized a few things.
1. We all need to look up more
I've now been sitting in this spot (off and on) for about 4 days. It wasn't until tonight that someone finally noticed me (it was my roommate, I told her about my new spot). A lot of people have walked by and probably hundreds of people have drove by. But nobody has seen me. Many people are on their phones or just unaware of their surroundings.
2. Campus is beautiful
I don't even have a god view of the traditionally pretty buildings and spots, but with the changing leaves and just general beauty of campus, I'm glad I'm able to call this home.
3. Many people are careless drivers
As my dorm (and thus my spot) overlook the slightly-busy road, I've also been observing drivers. I've almost seen a lot of incidents. Sometimes drivers don't stop when someone is trying to cross in the crosswalk. Other times a car is following too close behind another car. And in general, people drive just too fast for a college zone. Don't forget, if you hit us then we don't pay our student loans.
4. There really isn't much like a subset in Iowa.
Tonight was the first night I really stopped to observe the sun set. The purple stripes in the sky over the pretty trees and football field made me happy to be right here, right now. I'm lucky to get to experience life and see the things I can. Only an Iowa sunset can say all that.
