19 Things I Learned Living in a Dorm

Lesson 1: Don't forget the shower shoes.

1. Don't drop the soap.

Then you will have to pick it up and your body may touch the dirty shower walls that has hair and other things on them.

2. Doing laundry actually isn't that bad.

Try not to do it on Sunday because the laundry room is very busy and packed with people waiting.

3. Take your laundry out of the machines when it is ready.

There are some eager people in there, waiting to put their clothes in who may take your clothes out. (Me being one of them, sorry)

4. Plan your nap around when the band is going to be outside of your window.

(Or construction, or whatever noise there may be). After a long day, the last thing you want is to be woken up by constant noise.

5. Shower shoes, man.

6. Don't have too many snacks in the room.

Because when you get bored, all you want to do is eat them all. Or you eat something when you get home after a night out, after that slice of pizza or french fries that you ate already. (Maybe that's just me).

7. The Health Center

...definitely not the same as your doctor at home

8. 8 AM class means 7:35 wake-up.

Just cause you live close enough to your class

9. Dining Hall.

Cannot even be compared to the home-cooked food at home.

10. You should have a big enough fridge to fit all your good stuff in it.

And a freezer for ice cream. And microwave for popcorn.

11. Keep the AC on so it doesn't get gross in the room.

Especially in Florida...my AC is always blasting which could probably explain why my ceiling has fallen a few times and water has come down. But nothing is worse than coming back to a muggy room that could smell bad.

12. Always walk around with socks or shoes on.

Nothing is nastier than stepping barefoot on something dirty or squishy.

13. Carry your room key with you into the shower.

Just so you don't lock yourself out in a towel.

14. Wash your sheets.

Don't forget that you're sleeping on them every night. They get dirty just like clothes do!

15. Respect your roommate, their privacy, and space.

You have to live with someone for months so you should keep a good relationship. It could definitely affect your college experience. And if you dont have a good relationship, it isn't the end of the world.

16. You have neighbors.

You should make friends with them.

17. Flush the toilet.

Nobody wants to see your nasty shit.

18. Sometimes you gotta shower with the door open (but curtain closed in front)

It could feel extremely claustrophobic in there, plus you need a good rinse and shave.

19. It is really fun at times.

You're close (walking distance) to all of your best friends!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
