10 Things I Learned In High School

...and what I wish I knew as a freshman.

10 Things I Learned In High School
Logan Cwikla

High school is a very important part of your life. All of the good, the bad, the useless information you studied for hours just so you could get that A, the sleepless nights because you had a project due the next day, and all of the endless memories you’ve made along the way are all meaningful in a way.

Whether you realize it or not, high school teaches many life lessons without intending to; so, here is what high school has taught me.

  1. These are some of the best years of your life - believe it or not, high school really is some of the best years you’ll have. Before you know it you’ll be looking back on the past 4 years of your life wondering where they went, so make sure you enjoy every possible second.
  2. Girls are so mean - you’re going to meet some that honestly just hate you for no reason at all. Others will hate you for stupid things too. Be better than that, what they say and do does not matter.
  3. Be nice to everyone - you never know who is going through what, so just be nice to everyone.
  4. Your first heartbreak is going to suck - you can cry and cry and cry all you want but you’re going to have to realize that first of all, boys are not worth your tears, and that there’s plenty of other guys in the world so you gotta move on.
  5. You’re going to find who your real friends are - there are so many fake people in this world but when nothing is going right, pay close attention to who is genuinely there for you. The people that stay by your side no matter what are your real friends.
  6. Take care of yourself - I mean sleep every night for as long as you can, take a day off if you’re really behind with your work, go into school late if you don’t feel well. Your health is much more important than your grades.
  7. Don’t stress too much - you’re going to get so stressed at some points. Finals, AP exams, SATs, ACTs, cheerleading tryouts, band concert, whatever it is that’s stressing you out, you will be perfectly fine. Too much stress will only hurt you in the long run.
  8. Talk to the new kid - I was the new kid at my high school in the middle of my Freshman year. So speaking for that side, being at a new school and not knowing anyone is terrible and terrifying so having a friend or two at the time would have been nice. Be friends with the new kid, make things easier for them.
  9. Dreams don’t work unless you do - your dream school requires an SAT score of 1300? Study like crazy and retake your SAT. If there’s something you want, work hard for it.
  10. Just because you made a mistake, does not mean you are a mistake - we’re all human, humans make mistakes. No matter how big or small the mistake is, move on from it. No matter what people may say or make up about you keep your head up and move on.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
