Moving to a new place is hard. There’s no going around it. There are so many new things to grow accustomed to and things to learn so that you don’t seem out of the regular mix. This has become especially true and real to me in my recent move to New York. And being from somewhere that is rather south on the map of America, learning all of these new things has actually become something I love. Here are a few things that I have learned as a Floridian moving to the Big Apple.
1. SO MUCH WALKING
That had to be in all caps because my feet haven’t stopped hurting, and I don’t think I have stopped sweating since I landed a few days ago. But, it is nice that I burn so many calories while just trying to get places.
2. You don’t have to smile at everyone.
I guess in Florida and in most places in the south, it is normal to smile and even give a slight wave or nod to almost anyone you encounter. Well, that is much different here. I have noticed that it is almost better to just avoid looking at people at all.
3. It’s still just as hot.
Growing up in Florida, I assumed that we have it the worst when it comes to the amount of heat we receive from the sun. I was wrong. With the amount of asphalt and buildings, the heat is trapped and I am still feeling like I am in Florida with just a lot trendier people.
4. The food is perfect.
It’s a good thing there is so much walking in New York, because there are so many restaurants everywhere you turn, and they also happen to be incredibly delicious. I have not had a single bad meal since I landed, I don’t see that changing any time soon.
5. There is always something new to look at.
I really try not to come off as a total newbie to the city, but it is so hard when everything is so beautiful and tall. Every skyscraper stretches for miles, the old churches beam with beauty, and the people are also just fun to watch.
There is no questioning that New York is one of my favorite places to be now. And I think it is safe to say I have made the right choice in hopping over a few states. The problem is going to be trying to get me back to Florida.
