Things That Happen When You Finally Move Into An Apartment

Apartments in Gainesville are amazing.

It's that time of year again. The Gator Nation is filled with students, some old and some new. There are the new freshman who are busy moving into their new dorms and also taking up the entire Target on Archer.

Then there are those of us who are pros at moving already so we either show up on Saturday to be early or at 10 pm on Sunday night before school starts. When you move into a new apartment, things can be stressful but also very exciting. Here are some things that happen during move in.

1. Parents take pictures of absolutely everything

If your parents come up to help you move, hopefully, they do, you know that there is a photo shoot of everything. There will be pictures with each sibling, of every move in step and maybe even of every single box you open. Be prepared for a large influx of photography flash.

2. You sit on the floor contemplating which box to open first, if any

After you've successfully gotten everything out of the truck or your car, the fun part begins. Now you have to open a million boxes and organize everything. I know I dread this part and sit and stare for a good half hour before opening anything.

3. You never fail to be missing something

No matter how many checklists you made, you forgot something. It can be anything from a blender to your favorite dress.

4. You won't be able to sleep for the first few days

It's always an adjustment when you move into a new place. You either can't sleep because you're still getting used to the room or like me, you have an irrational fear that a murderer will come in the middle of the night.

5. You'll love the freedom of doing whatever you want in the apartment when no one is around

It's great to have dance parties at all hours and cook whatever you want. It's your own place and you have a lot of independence.

6. There will be a bug and you'll most likely have no idea what to do

This one has definitely happened more than once. I hate most bugs and I hate killing them even more, so I have to suffer through the anxiety of what it is I have to do to get rid of it.

7. You'll absolutely love your new place

If you're lucky, and you probably will be, you'll love your new place and it'll bring you amazing memories in the year ahead.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
