With the new Deadpool movie coming out this Valentine's week, it seems fans are growing more and more anxious with anticipation. A lot of people are absolutely ecstatic to see Deadpool because of his quick witty puns, spontaneous humor including famous catch phrases and incredible katana skills, but I believe some of us have forgotten how disturbing his backstory really is. Let's look at the cool and disturbing things about Deadpool we didn't know about.
1. He was a full-fledged supervillain before they remade him into an Anti-Hero
That's right. Deadpool made his first appearance in The New Mutants in 1991 and later in the X-force series as a supervillain. However, he has evolved into the original, “anti-hero” role he is today, which for those who are unaware, is a character who lacks all conventional attributes of a hero. Sounds just like our Deadpool.
2. He is in a love triangle with Death & Thanos
Yes! Death is a female. But most importantly, Deadpool’s love affair with Death is sparked from the fact that Deadpool is immortal; Now there are several variations to how Deadpool gained his regeneration powers. The official one is that he received them from a test chemical called weapon X that also gave Wolverine his regeneration abilities. Another variation is where Thanos comes into action. Thanos is a super villain born from an evil race on Saturn's moon. He too was on the verge of dying when he met Death herself and became very infatuated. However when, Thanos learned that Death actually loved Deadpool he became jealous and cursed Deadpool with immortality so that he could never be with Death. No matter how many times Deadpool actually gets injured, Death is unable to take his soul away because of Deadpool's cursed self-healing powers. To ease Deaths pain of not ever being able to be with Deadpool, he intentionally welcomes getting killed to temporarily spend time with his love. Who knew Deadpool was so romantic?
3. Deadpool is the only Anti-Hero who is schizophrenic
Yes, Deadpool suffers from schizophrenia, a product from post-traumatic stress and terminal cancer. It is the voices in Deadpool’s head that has made his dialogue with others and himself quite entertaining in his comic book series. Another thing I would like to inform fans about is that Deadpool doesn't just break the fourth wall because of this psychological disorder or because he is just trying to be funny, but also because he is absolutely aware that there is another multiverse looking back at him.
Deadpool may be the only Marvel character that realizes that he is not real, and for that knowledge alone, one can only imagine how much more insane that has made him---knowing he is just a joke character pawned into an unfortunate backstory with an oblivious cast of heroes and villains. And that may be most devastating fact about Deadpool I feel was added to the franchise. But nonetheless, Deadpool really enjoys his time communicating with us by breaking the fourth wall.
In the spirit of the new Deadpool movie coming out, I hope some of these facts were more entertaining than disturbing for those new to the Deadpool fan base. And for the older fan base, I hope reading this article brought a little bit of nostalgia back to the community. Happy Deadpool Week!
