15 Things You've Experience If You, Like Me, DON'T Have Netflix

In This Article:

In a world where it seems like absolutely everyone has Netflix, Hulu, or some kind of streaming service, it's hard to believe that there are still people out there who don't. I have never had any of these things. My family just wasn't interested in paying for it, and as a college student, I certainly don't want to either. Yet, not having Netflix is a definite bummer sometimes.

Here are some things that I've been told or experienced thanks to my lack of Netflix.

1. “Wait, you don’t have Netflix?!”

Yes, there are still some of us out there.

2. Hearing about a wildly popular TV show or movie, then realizing that it’s only on Netflix

Remember when the "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" craze, Peter Kavinsky's "Woah, woah, woah" line, and Noah Centineo's sexiness swept the nation? I don't, because I couldn't watch the movie.

3. Watching a really good movie/show on Netflix and realizing you essentially can never watch it again

4. Seeing memes about Netflix and literally saying “can’t relate”

Like when people talk about the annoyance of Netflix asking you if you want to continue watching the show.

5. A night in with friends means watching Netflix

Making friends with people who have Netflix accounts is key.

6. When your friend asks you what you want to watch on Netflix

7. Secretly hoping that your friend will forget to log out of their account on your laptop so you can finally have access

8. When they do remember to sign out and your dreams are crushed

9. “I don’t think I could live without Netflix. I use it all the time.”

"Well, Phyllis, I've never had Netflix and I'm doing just fine."

10. Hearing people talk about binge-watching a show you wish you could binge too

11. When people debate Netflix vs. Hulu and you can’t contribute to either argument

Or other Netflix politics, like the awkwardness of changing the Netflix password to kick your ex off your shared account.

12. People freaking out that their favorite movie/show is leaving Netflix and you’re just like

13. The FOMO on Netflix is real

There are so many Netflix things that I don't get. Like why are "Stranger Things" and "Riverdale" so good? Why is orange the new black? What makes the mirror black? These are questions I'll never get answered.

14. Finding a movie/show on YouTube is a true blessing

Or just living off of random scene clips and compilations as compensation.

15. Realizing that you’ve saved a lot of money and time just by not having Netflix

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
