Six Things Every URI Student Should Know

Oh, how I wish there was a guide that spelled out all the do’s and dont's for students, most specifically for a freshman student, at URI. The school year is quickly approaching and the transition from high school to college, or even for transfer college students, is probably one of the biggest lifestyle changes you’ll have to make as young adults. These 6 quick tips will help all students who don’t quite know what to expect, by putting you a step ahead of the game and make your school year run just a bit smoother!

1. Box and Carry program.

Just when you think all your school expenses are covered, there are still books! Fortunately, the URI bookstore offers a “Box & Carry” program to freshman students, allowing you to reserve new books, used books, rental books, digital books, course modules, classroom supplies and dorm supplies all by simply ordering them online. Your order will be boxed and ready to be picked up on move-in weekend! No chaos, no hassle! How do you know what books you need? By completing the course list on the website, you’ll be able to access and order the books needed for your courses. Simply log on to the URI Book Store to get started!

2. You better invest in snow boots...

At Rhody, you sure can’t escape the harsh New England winters. Don’t think just because classes are still on when it snows that they will be easy to get to. Although the school does the best it can to get the roads and sidewalks cleared, you may find yourself caught in a tough snow trek to reach the top of campus. The hill smack dab in the middle of campus is no help, however; it’s always a good idea to grab some friends and some sleds and take advantage of the beautiful white campus while you can!
3. Hungry Rhody Food Craze

What do you do when you’re starving at 12 a.m. and have nothing to eat in your dorm? Log onto Hungry Rhody to access the menus of restaurants located both on and nearby campus for both takeout and delivery. Most restaurants even accept Ram Account! The variety is exquisite. Restaurants ranging from American to Chinese to Mediterranean. You won’t be starved at URI!

4. Quad Fun

Take advantage of the good weather by taking a stroll through the quad. Almost daily there is something going on, ranging from Greek life awareness to petting zoos to Hemp Fest. It’s a great place to hang with friends to either toss a Frisbee, lay a blanket down or meet new
people.

5. Extra Academic Help

It is normal for any student to struggle in a college course. Fortunately, at Uri there are many different options for seeking extra help. Monday through Friday, located in Roosevelt hall is the Academic Engagement Center where trained staff, peer leaders, and even learning specialists can assist you in areas you need help in. You can also seek help by going to your Professor’s office hours or forming study groups.

6. Student Involvement

Student involvement options at URI are never ending and range from clubs, Greek life, intramural club sports and even D1 sports teams. At the “First Night” activity fair located outside the Memorial Union, you can catch a glimpse of all the different programs and activities offered at URI. You get a chance to meet students representing the different activities, as well as the chance to sign up! It’s a great way to meet new people and make friends and start off college on the right foot!

And there you have it!

Follow these easy guidelines and you'll be on your way, on your path to success! Put yourself out there, and soon you will realize how rewarding it is to be a Rhody Ram!

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.
