Every girl who has ever read or seen Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has thought to herself, "Where can I find a Mr. Darcy in the real world?" So, boys, here are six tips that you can follow to become more like half of the female population's ideal guy!
1. The best girls aren't always the easiest.
Elizabeth wanted nothing to do with Mr. Darcy. In fact, she even turned down his hand in marriage on the first occasion upon which he asked her. Her heart wasn’t an easy one to turn…but Darcy saw Elizabeth’s value, and he was willing to work hard to win her over. Boys, just because a girl is hard to get doesn’t mean that she isn’t worth the extra work. Side Note: This is NOT supposed to be an encouragement to keep obsessively chasing a girl even after she’s rejected you several times. It’s an encouragement to see value in girls who aren’t easy, per say.
2. Gentlemanly behavior.
Manners? Courtesy? Classiness? Culture? RESPECT? These things are more important to girls than you will ever know. Help a girl step into a horse drawn carriage. Open the door for her. Show her that chivalry isn't dead. Girls who feel respected by a guy want to reciprocate that respect!
3. Dress well.
Okay, okay, so I guess period clothing isn’t exactly the most popular every day choice...BUT, keeping a clean, put together appearance does a lot for a guy. So does period clothing.
4. Intelligence is ATTRACTIVE.
Guys. It’s important to be able to make a girl laugh, but being able to carry on a deep, meaningful, and occasionally witty conversation is VITAL. It doesn’t make you a loser to be considered intelligent…in fact, I’d argue quite the opposite.
5. Letters are always okay.
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Letters. You should write them.
6. Actions speak louder than words
One of the sweetest things Mr. Darcy did in the novel is when he goes to find Elizabeth’s runaway sister, Lydia. Before he even knew that Elizabeth was (finally) in love with him, he went above and beyond to bring Lydia home after ensuring her marriage to the man she ran away with…which he did by giving the man a very large sum of money. Even better, he didn’t want Elizabeth to know what he’d done. He cared about her so much that he just wanted her happiness, and he wanted her to love him for him, not for what he’d done for her and her family.
