7 Things a Dad Learns from His Daughters

Growing up in a household of three girls and one boy, I was lucky enough to be super close to my dad! Whether it was going golfing, fishing, or learning to grill I was definitely attached to him at the hip! Hey, I mean he only had one boy to shoot skeet with he was bound to get a girl to try.

Although I am older now, my sisters and I are still and will forever be Daddy's little girls. While we say we learn a lot from our parents, I personally think we rub off on our parents a little bit as well. They have to learn a few things from us, even if it's just how short their patience is. And boy, there is a lot to learn when you have daughters.

Here are a few things any dad with daughters has definitely mastered!

1. Learning to give the girls some space when need be!

Yes, we all know we all have those days every now and then, but thankfully dads have learned to read the signs and give us some extra leeway on those days. If they are really good they will stock the fridge with chocolate ice cream and pass it through a slightly cracked door along with a spoon.

2. They always make you feel loved

My dad never fails to say "did I tell you how much I love you today?" just this simple reminder of his love, makes everything else worthwhile.

3. They learn to take the perfect selfie

This is definitely for those trendy dads out there! What better way to capture a picture with your favorite girls than with that duck face!

4. They always know the right thing to say

My dad has been well versed in this! Stick to the script and you won't get hurt. "honey this is beautiful" "You look pretty" "yes you can have money" and "do you want two of it" are always safe bets.

5. They are always their daughter's first date

Growing up, daddy daughter Sunday lunch dates were a weekly occurrence. So just remember dads, although your girls may grow up you will always be their first true love. Make sure they know that even after their second, third, etc loves break their hearts, you'll be the true love that never leaves them.

6. Pink becomes a statement in the wardrobe

While we know girls love pink, when there are so many girls in your household a man needs learn to embrace his pastels. How else are you going to match your princesses at Daddy-Daughter Dances?

7. They will forever be incredibly protective

Whether it is threatening to bring out the shotgun, or simply tearing up when she leaves to go on a date. A daughter is always daddies little girl even until she has daughters of her own. So men, watch out.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
