It’s Okay That Things Didn’t Work Out How You Planned

It turns out when your life doesn't go as planned, it means that doors are opening to places you never thought you'd venture to.

Some things in life don't go as we planned in our heads. Unfortunately, that's just how life goes. If you're anything like me, you like to plan out your future with hopes it will all go as planned. However, when things don't go like you planned, you feel totally let down and disappointed in yourself. You go through the phase of being mad at yourself and caught up on the idea of what more could you have possibly done to achieve the originally planned goals. But then, eventually, with the help of your loved ones around you, you begin to realize it's not the end of the world. Life is full of up's and down's and what matters most is how you deal with the punches that life throws at you. I know at the beginning the disappointment you experienced was probably almost unbarring and you felt like such a failure. But, unpredicted outcomes are what will eventually lead us to where we belong.

If it's a huge exam that you studied every second of the day for weeks before the exam but then you ended up failing, just remember you did the best you could and there will be other exams. If the person you loved and saw a future with left you, then allow your heart to heal and move on because they clearly didn't deserve you. If you didn't get hired at that “big girl” job you applied for to work at after you graduate, don't worry there will be plenty more job opportunities in your future. If you didn't get into your program at your school that you worked your butt off to achieve this goal, just remember when you finally get into that specific program, it will mean more to you after not giving up.

Life is completely uncontrollable, as we never know what will happen next. Your life plan may have seemed perfect in your head but reality isn't like that. In the long run, you just have to learn to roll with life’s punches, it will benefit you. Always remind yourself that quitting is NOT an option, and persevering through difficult circumstances and disappointments will only benefit you and make you feel better in the end. It's best to stop and remind ourselves to breathe, believe and look back at all the things that you have achieved. Unfortunately, being let down is inevitable, and it takes more energy to fight against it than it does to accept it and work harder to eventually achieve the certain goals. Make the best out of life’s hiccups will allow you to grow as a person. Obstacles are just a part of life whether we enjoy it or not. Just sit back and reflect on what you've been through and how it has shaped you as a person.

Let go of the failures that are weighing down on your shoulders, stand tall and be proud of both your strength and weaknesses that make us all who we are. I know things can get tough, but everything is going to be okay I promise. Who knows, maybe your future will turn out even better than you planned in your head. You have made it this far and the best has yet to come. Hang in there and don't forget to keep an open mind, you never know when opportunities will appear in your life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
