Things That Didn't Totally Suck In 2016

Yes, there were a few things.

Okay, so 2016 really wasn’t the greatest. The election tore the country apart. We watched the United Kingdom leave the European Union. We met Brock Turner. Harambe was shot. Zika broke out. We lost Prince, David Bowie, Alan Rickman, and Harper Lee. We read countless headlines of hate crimes and police brutality. And so it’s not totally crazy to see why a lot of people want to name 2016: “the worst year ever”.

But really, some pretty awesome stuff also happened in 2016.

The Rio Olympics

Katie Ledecky won an Olympic final by 11 seconds. Michael Phelps won his 23rd gold medal. Simone Biles came into the games relatively unknown and left a superstar. Usain Bolt ran super fast. There were more female athletes than ever before. And more openly LGBT athletes than ever before.

There are more tigers in the world.

And more pandas.

And more manatees.

The ice bucket challenge actually accomplished something.

Remember when we all dumped freezing water over our heads for ALS? Yeah, it actually worked. The University of Massachusetts medical school found the gene linked to causing ALS.

Trees in India.

800,000 volunteers planted 50 million trees in India in 24 hours.

Two brothers saw color for the first time.

The Juno spacecraft reached Jupiter.

Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar.

FINALLY!

Harriet Tubman replaced Andrew Jackson on the $20.

“Hamilton”

While the show officially opened in 2015, it swept the world this year. And it was pretty freaking awesome.

We gained some pretty good music.

Beyoncé gave us Lemonade. Kanye gave us The Life of Pablo. Chance gave us Coloring Book. Frank Ocean gave us Blonde. Kendrick Lamar gave us untitled unmastered. Drake gave us Views. JoJo gave us Mad Love. Lady Gaga gave us Joanne.

The Cavs won the NBA Championship.

After 52 years.

And the Cubs won a World Series.

After 108 years.

WW2 Vet Funeral.

Okay, so it’s not too awesome that a WW2 vet died. Or that he didn’t have any surviving family. Or that he was homeless. But what IS super awesome is that 200 strangers came to his funeral.

Harry Potter continues!

The release of the new book The Cursed Child and the new movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has Harry Potter fans everywhere super excited.

Finding Dory!

We waited 13 years for this! Yeah, it wasn’t as good as Finding Nemo but it was pretty freaking cute.

A plane went around the entire world without a drop of fuel.

Someone stopped self-harming.

Someone is beating an eating disorder.

Someone overcame depression.

Someone got help for an addiction.

Someone beat cancer.

Someone married the love of their life.

Someone had a baby.

So, yeah, we dealt with a lot of crap in 2016. But a lot of really good, cool, awesome things also happened. To the world. To individual people. Good things happen all around us, all the time, every day. Choose to see the good things.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
