If you are chronically ill, odds are that you have been on the receiving end of many, if not all, of these comments. I believe that all of these things are said with good intentions, even though they make my head spin. I know that it is hard to understand and know what to say if you have not had to walk in the shoes of a less than healthy individual. Whether it be from a family member, friend or doctor, I think we can all relate to the following.

1. You're too young to be having this many health issues.

I don't think there is an age requirement for bad health. But I am glad we agree I shouldn't be having these issues, so can you fix me now... ?

2. You don't look sick.

I'm a firm believer in "when you look good, you feel good," or at least better than you would if you looked just as bad as you originally looked. I just wasted half of my energy for the day packing on makeup simply so that I WOULDN'T look sick. Thank you for noticing.

3. You were fine yesterday, though.

And now I am not. My health changes in the blink of an eye. One minute I can be fine and the next I may be bedridden. Don't waste your time trying to understand it because I don't even get it.

4. I don't want to catch what you have.

FOR THE LAST TIME WHAT I HAVE IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. Bye.

5. Have you ever thought that it may just be all in your head?

Yes; my vision quickly fading, the debilitating pain, the blacking out and so much more is just all in my head.

6. Oh, you just need a good nights rest!

Let's be honest, I could hibernate all winter and I would still be this exhausted. Chronic fatigue does not disappear with sleep; though I do wish it worked that way.

7. Taking that much medication can't be good for you.

You know what isn't good for me? Letting infection run free through my body or you know- dying. I am well aware of the side effects, but sometimes I have to pick my battles.

8. You always cancel or flake.

I promise that it upsets me more than you that I have to cancel. Its another battle that I had to accept defeat on.

9. What does your diet look like? I have heard that changes in diet can really affect your health.

My diet looks like I would not be having these issues if my health was based off how I ate.

10. You should try working out more. It may help you feel better.

See... that is great and all until I am stuck leaning over a bench trying to hold myself up or someone is having to scoop me off of the floor. I do what I can and, honestly, do a lot more than I should when it comes to working out.

11. Have you tried meditating?

I lay on a Spoonk mat every night before bed (if you have not tried it, you really should). I mediate. I do yoga. Sure it's good for me and helps with what it can, but it will not cure me.

Like I said, I know these things are usually said with a good heart and in a lighthearted manner but my sanity is starting to suffer. Especially when the doctors constantly repeat the first few. Let's try to come up with better suggestions for the ill people in our lives.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
