Waking up in the morning is undoubtedly one of the hardest things.

Last week, I wrote an article about sleep and how my nighttime routine was changing. That got me thinking about the how the journey from bed is equally as long and time-consuming as the journey to bed. Just like we have to do things before going to bed, we also do things before we start the day. We brush our teeth, check our phones, and eat breakfast. We all seem to have some sort of overlap in our morning routine, so here is a basic outline of (almost) everyone’s morning routine:

1. Wake up.

Although your internal clock is telling you that it is time to start the day, your body simply does not want to get up. The bed is so much comfortable and better than anything else.

2. Check your phone for any text messages that might have arrived during the night.

Who are we kidding, though? Who will try to text you late at night?

3. Check your Snapchat.

You have to catch up with the snaps people might have posted while you were sleeping. Trust me, people post a ton of Snapchats at night.

4. After you check Snapchat, you check other social medias like Facebook.

Your Facebook feed is definitely not as interesting as your Snapchat, but you still have to check it.

5. Ah! The time comes when you actually have to get up.

It takes a while, but you manage to escape the bed.

6. You head to the bathroom to get ready.

You brush your teeth, wash your face, and comb your hair.

7. Depending on if you are feeling healthy, you might change out of your PJs into some workout clothes.

8. Do some exercise.

You might do some cardio, or really anything that might elevate your heart rate. Now if you have a lot of time, you might even go to the gym for a good 30 to 60 minutes.

9. Go to the bathroom again.

You are sweaty and disgusting, so you have to shower and continue your morning restroom routine.

10. Check the weather.

You have to see if it will be raining or hailing today to be prepared.

11. Get ready!

It’s time to get changed. Now depending on whether you had time last night, you might have separated clothes you wanted to wear today. If not, you improvise an outfit.

12. Make breakfast.

No time? Then just have something easy like cereal and milk. Otherwise, take some time to spoil yourself with some good and nutritious breakfast.

13. While making breakfast, you check your social media again.

Somehow your Facebook feed feels more interesting than a couple of minutes ago.

14. You might squeeze a YouTube video while you wait for your food to be ready.

15. It’s done! It’s time to eat a wonderful breakfast.

Celebration dance time!

16. Eat your breakfast.

You try to minimize any distractions (like your phone), so you can focus on breakfast.

17. Text a friend.

You failed to minimize your distractions by texting your friend a funny thing you might have remembered or a GIF you might have found that resonates with an inside joke you both have.

18. You watch some Netflix, YouTube, or some TV while you finish your breakfast.

This is a bad habit you are failing to break.

19. Clean up after yourself.

You finish breakfast, and now it is time to wash those dishes.

20. Remind yourself of the things you have to accomplish today, prioritizing the things that are most important.

You check your schedule for the day.

21. Reply to your friend.

They text back with a sassy or witty comment, so you one-up them with a sassier, wittier comment. You might even send another GIF.

22. Check Snapchat again.

You were already texting your friend, so checking Snapchat is just a natural progression. You think that now that you are on your phone it won’t take long to check Snapchat. Honestly, you are addicted!

23. Get your things ready.

If you want to really to accomplish those things, then you have to get ready with the things you will need to get them done.

24. Start your day.

After all that, you are ready to kick some butt today.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
