(8*2) Things Every College Double Major Is Doubly Tired Of Hearing

Double the classes and double the passion lead to double the (condescending?) remarks from the public.

Some college students choose to double major while completing their undergraduate career. While this is definitely not an easy endeavor, every motivated student has their own set of reasons for deciding to step up to the challenge of successfully completing two degrees in the same amount of time that it typically takes to complete one. Sometimes, to an outsider, the two majors seem connected and other times, the two majors may seem to be polar opposites.

No matter what the outsider's perspective is, here are 16 things that all double majors are tired of hearing.

1. "You're a double major so that must mean you are really smart."

I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I am "really smart" merely because I am stepping up to the challenge of being a double major.

2. "Why would you want to create more work for yourself?"

College is a place to learn and instill the realms of knowledge that you are passionate about into real life. I'm not creating more work for myself, rather I am feeding my passion for knowledge.

3. "So this tells me that you find it difficult to make a decision."

Um... no not at all. This tells you that I'm passionate about two areas of study and made the decision to immerse myself within them both.

4. "Those majors don't even connect."

Actually, through constructing an interdisciplinary path of education, I have come to the conclusion that my majors do connect.

5. "What do you plan to do with these degrees?"

This question is applicable to all college students, not limited to those who are choosing to double major.

6. "Which program is your favorite?"

Obviously, I don't have a favorite or else I would only have one major!

7. "You probably have no free time."

Yeah, let's not talk about that.

8. "It must be really hard to double major."

It's actually more common than most people generally think.

9. "Are you planning on completing an internship with both programs?"

10. "So what's your minor?"

I don't have one.

11. "You must think you're better than everyone else because you have two majors."

I can't even believe people actually say this.

12. "How do you get everything done?"

The same way that any college student gets anything done...

13. "Alright, so you must not put your best effort in one program to compensate for merely getting the work accomplished for two majors, right?"

Wrong.

14. "Do you really want to do this?"

I wouldn't have made it this far if I didn't want to...

15. "Which subject area do you plan on using for your career?"

16. "So you actually love learning?"

Yes!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
