Thing You Should Never Say Or Do To Someone Who Works In Retail

First off, don't take me the wrong way, I absolutely love my job in retail. I love my co-workers, and I love making a woman feel beautiful inside and out. However, some of the things you hear and see are just plain ridiculous. I have only worked in retail for a little over a year, so I have very minimal experience. Here is a list of the major things we in retail hate.

1. Don't pick crappy music for the store.

Whoever is in charge of picking the store music for any retail store needs to be fired! Some of it is just awful! I do not need to hear "Happy" by Pharrell every single time I go into a store. I am to the point where some of these songs I hear at work give me nightmares about something disastrous happening at work. I think I will live for a week if I can go without hearing "The Name Game."

2. The Magical Stockroom doesn't exist.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but there is no magical stockroom that holds your exact size. Only major chains have huge stockrooms, like Walmart. Retail employees are not trying to hide anything from you. We would like to apologize to the public that our stockrooms are not equivalent to the Narnia wardrobe. This is it folks:

3. Stop telling us how to do our job.

This is probably hands down, the worst. Strangers complaining about how we do our job or telling us how to do our job is awful. Believe it or not, we actually get paid to do this! Also believe it or not, we are not paid to be your slave whenever you come into the store. We are also human beings. How would you like it if someone came into your professional place of work and constantly explained to you how to do your job. It is disrespectful! Being a customer you have absolutely no idea what happens in the store before or after you are there. Follow the golden rule and we won't have a problem.

4. Yes, I only speak English.

I do not have to be bilingual to work in retail. I can speak some German, but I haven't had a German customer yet. I do not expect you to speak English when you come into the store, but for you to expect me to speak your native language is uncalled for. I will still try to help you, but I can't help it if I don't understand you or your terrible game of charades. Cussing at me in another language is also uncalled for.

5. Talking on your cell phone.

There is no one that you desperately need to talk to while shopping. Talking on your cell phone in public is disrespectful anywhere. Especially while at the cash register. If you talk on your cell phone in the store it slows down your experience, so by all means don't wait the extra two minutes to make a call. It might give the employees something interesting to talk about when you leave.

6. Coming in at closing.

Believe it or not there is a sign on our door that states the store hours. Everyone has somewhere or something they need to do when we get off work, so please don't hold us up. Coming in five minutes to closing is disregarding that we have a life outside of work, so please just don't do it. I have had a customer say to me at closing, "I know you are closing right now, but I am still going to try on these clothes anyhow!"

Don't be this person. Don't be rude. You should treat people with respect.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
