Unless you live under a rock, you've probably heard the term "thick" or more commonly "thicc" floating around. "Thicc" refers to someone who is curvier, and quite literally, thicker in certain areas of their body. In recent years being thicc has become very desirable. Thicc is arguably now the beauty standard and it's the best thing to happen to beauty standards, well, ever!
Flashback to medieval times. In this time being heavier set was considered the beauty standard. Extra pounds were associated with royalty and nobles. The problem with the beauty standards at this time is that they were unattainable. The average person could barely afford to eat one or two small meals a day. In addition, most people performed manual labor to get by. It was easy to be very thin and it was hard to be fat.
Now think back to the not so distant past. For most of the history that those alive today can remember being model-thin was considered the beauty standard. Again the problem here is this is unattainable. In modern times food was more readily accessible and more caloric and more jobs took place sitting at a desk, so it was easy to be heavier and harder to be thinner.
This has been a pattern throughout history. The beauty standard is whatever is unattainable. Due to this the vast majority of people don't get to feel that they are beautiful, leading to issues of low self-esteem and even eating disorders. It's like society was setting its self up for failure.
Enter in the thicc movement. This movement reverses the typical script. Now having a few extra inches everywhere is the beauty standard, and doing so is very attainable! The average woman in the United States wears a size twelve. Now a whole bunch of people easily fall into this category of thicc and feel more beautiful because of it.
All bodies are beautiful, thicc or thin! But it's about time thicc individuals got the praise they deserve!
