It's your freshman year of college, a new beginning -- or as I like to call it, a second chapter in your life. You have heard college is hard, the parties start on Thursdays and your professors are a nightmare. Well, to be honest, some of that is true and some of that is false. So freshman, listen up and be ready for what I'm about to say. You control your freshman year, whether it's a good year or a bad year. You control what days the parties start on and you control the difficulty of professors and classes.
Alright, so you have heard that if you and your roommate become friends you won't have any problems and if you aren't friends you will fight all the time. Actually there is a 90 percent chance that some times you won't agree with your roommate on something. You have the power to get along with your roommate if you both cooperate on sharing a small living space. There's another rumor going around that you should find a roommate that is just like you or that you should room with your best friend from home. Well sorry, but that is only accurate to some extent. My roommate was the complete opposite of me. She was athletic, I wasn't. She was a biology major, I was business. We had different friends. But at the end of the year, she became my best friend. If you have someone who isn't the same person as you, then it is more likely that you will try new things instead of doing the same thing you would do if you were at home.
Now, parties are a touchy topic for some. You are leaving home and you don't want to be told what to do so you go to all the parties you hear about. Honestly, there are too many parties that if you went to all of them you wouldn't have time for anything else. Sometimes there's gonna be a random party on a Tuesday, but I highly suggest not attending it if you have an 8 a.m. the next day. You can pick and choose what parties to go to but it's probably better if you go on a weekend and when you don't have a big exam coming up.
Finally, professors can be awful sometimes and assign huge assignments to you the night before and you get all mad. What probably happened was that the assignment was written on your syllabus at the beginning of the year, but you were too lazy to check it and your professor only reminded you the day before about turning it in. The main goal in college academics, check your syllabus.
Now, you have all this power and freedom from your parents and as some say, your responsibilities, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do your homework, maintain a social life and stay healthy. So control yourselves freshmen, these will be the best years of your lives, but only if you do it right.
