It's the second day of recruitment and you've already started to lose your voice and you're sweating more than you knew was humanly possible. But every time you scream and sing the opening songs, the energy shared with your sisters brings out a strange happiness that you would never be able to explain to a non-Greek without sounding insane.
This is my first year on the other side of recruitment, being behind the scenes. I'm nervous, but more importantly, I'm excited. The stories, laughs and memories shared have brought my chapter closer than ever before.
During one of our workshops, we were all asked what Theta meant to us personally and what our favorite experiences were that Theta has lead us to. Every single sister shared a unique meaning of how Theta played an important role in their life and how they wouldn't change a thing if they had the opportunity to do it all over again. I learned so many new things about girls I didn't know well and even more about my close friends.
Theta to me is the sisters I never had growing up, a family, a shoulder to cry on, friends to comfort and console you. Theta is learning that you're not alone, being reassured that the little things mean much more than you'll ever know - like showing up at your best friends door with Chic-Fil-A and turning her entire day around. Theta is your big randomly texting you to let you know that you're a great friend and she "literally can't" live without you.
The fact that you're spending an entire week with every one of your sisters in a living room that's much too small, forced or not, you learn to love every weird quirk and food craving that comes out of your sisters mouths. Venting about the 6 A.M. alarms and lack of food will probably be the majority of your conversations, but you will bond and love your chapter more than you ever thought possible. Once the week is over, and you've gotten a good 10 hour night's sleep, you'll call your sisters and demand to hangout for the rest of the day after classes because you absolutely can't go any longer without seeing them.
Theta is faith, Theta is hope, and Theta is love, but the greatest of these is love.
