It’s the best season of the year! Red carpet season! The Oscars are rolling in with a bang this year as it's already making history before it has even started. If you haven’t been keeping up with all this exciting news I will fill you in. Let’s start with Mudbound. The film is the streaming platform’s first non-documentary to earn a citation from the Academy. But it doesn’t stop there. Rachel Morrison picked up a nod for best cinematography, becoming the first woman in Oscar history to get a nomination in that category. Pretty wild and only took the academy 90 years to finally get it right. Congrats Rachel!
To add onto the success of Mudbound we have director, Dee Rees, nominated for best adapted screenplay, making Rees the first black woman to pick up a nod in this category.Continuing on with some girl power we have Meryl Streep up for her 21st nomination (best actress for The Post) which has just made her the most nominated performer of all time. Can’t argue with the statistics, there is truly no one better than her.
Aside from the actress, directors, and cinematographers, we have a presenter who is making history this Oscar season. Daniela Vega is the first openly transgender woman to ever present at the Oscars. This whole Oscar season has been about breaking stereotypes and boundaries.
Films have brought us more together than ever before. It is more than just people on your screen reciting lines. We are taking real life issues and bringing them into the light. These Oscars have been the most historic yet and we haven’t even got to the actual show yet.
