While in session for school, it seems as if everyone has a never-ending list of tasks to complete, yet once summer arrives the hours go by sitting alone in bedrooms, secluded from the rest of the world whilst watching Netflix. Yet, there are numerous other ways you could spend your summer — which will advocate for you in the long run!

The best way to make use of your spare time within summer is to volunteer your time to your future. Many people assume that 'volunteering' automatically means feeding the poor or aiding the homeless through various community relief projects (though those are still fantastic ways to make use of time), but volunteering expands much more than just helping others, you can help yourself too! Now, when I say "volunteer time to your future" I don't necessarily mean studying — although if that's your forte then go for it! Volunteering time for your future depends on each person individually, it's all shaped around goals you have set for yourself, career choices or preferences, and anything else you aim to achieve.

You can volunteer time to your future by taking small steps forward towards a long-term goal. For example, dedicating an hour a day at the gym is a start if you wish to get fit. Keep in mind that personal goals aren't always limited to physical appearance; you can also spend your free time trying to develop new hobbies or habits, whether it be art or keeping yourself more organized. Summer is a great time to make up for those empty promises you make to yourself on New Years!

Along with personal goals, you can volunteer your time in the career choice that you prefer to essentially 'get ahead'. If you already know what you want to do with your life (go you!) then you can get a better idea of your career by volunteering in locations which will aid you in gaining experience for your future occupation. To exemplify, if you aspire to be in the medical field, volunteer your time in a hospital. Or, if you'd like to go into cosmetology, job shadow or apply at a salon. The possibilities are endless based upon your own future.

Volunteering your time to your future is the best method to feel productive during your spare time. Every little thing you do will count as a stone in paving the perfect path to your desired future. Remember to always make time for yourself too! Don't always dedicate your time and constantly flex your schedule for others. Overall, volunteering hours towards your personal goal or career-wise goal are both much more beneficial alternatives to binge watching Netflix or window-shopping around the mall.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
