Why Is There Only Room For One Great, Black Woman?

I always, always see something pitting the black woman to the next, and it makes me sick.

Why can’t we all be great?

As usual, I ran into a stump when thinking on what to speak on until I scrolled down my Facebook feed. I am bothered, and a bit unnerved on a number of people who find joy and entertainment in pitting black women against each other.

There have been too many times I’ve seen the classic “Who’s better?” or my personal favorite (please note the sarcasm) “Who’s prettier?” Funnily enough, it's ALWAYS someone being pitted against Beyoncé as if being better than her somehow makes that person the G.O.A.T.

Maybe it's my personal bias because I'm a fan of Mrs. Knowles-Carter or due to my journey to loving my blackness and wanting positivity for my people. Either way, it really rubs me the wrong way when I see people happy, no, eager to put down Beyoncé to uplift another black woman.

From Keri Hilson to Rihanna, to even Kelly Rowland, I see way too many memes, posts, and blog posts taking shots at this woman, trying to say someone is better than her.

And not to say Beyoncé is the best, but she is very good (hell, she’s great) at what she does (c’mon, she has the awards to prove it.), but that doesn’t mean RiRi, Kelly or Keri aren’t great also.

I never see posts like this comparing Taylor Swift to Selena Gomez, or Demi Lovato to Lady Gaga, just to name a few. I've never run into posts pitting these artists against each other, asking who's prettier or more talented. Yet I always, always see something pitting the black woman to the next, and it makes me sick.

We are ALL beautiful, we are ALL great, and there is enough success to go all around. If you must put someone down to make yourself or someone else seem better, are they (or you) all that great? Words cannot express my frustration at how some people are.

If you are not a fan of someone, that is your prerogative. Trust me, Beyoncé is not for everyone. But we don’t have to tear her down, drag her through mud, or try to read her for filth to make Kelly look good. Truth is, both ladies are STUNNING in their own right. Apples and oranges people; they’re different and different people are going to pick and choose which they like. But that does not mean one is nasty while the other is the best thing since sliced bread.

Share your thoughts with me (but leave the negativity out of it and away from me).

Christmas Tree

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
