With the terrorist attack in Brussels many parents, students and universities have been moving to slow down study abroad programs. With all of the dangers in the world, this is a natural reaction. We want to barricade our loved ones behind a protective brick wall, keeping them safe forever. But, the problem with that wall, is that it's really hard to see the world through cold, red, solid clay.

Studying abroad can be one of the greatest experiences of your life. With my varying secondary and collegiate education, I have had the opportunity to study abroad in France, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua and Honduras. I have been abroad, and at times, that may have made my family uncomfortable; when there were riots in Honduras, civil unrest in Nicaragua, when the Air France flight when missing and so much more. Danger follows human life because we are so vulnerable. But, this shouldn't stop you from seeing the world.

Currently I live in Charleston, South Carolina, a city that I never thought would see acts of violence. Last June, I was proved wrong as I drove past Emanuel AME church wondering why so many police cars were gathered outside. The thing is, I went about my life that night, unafraid of what might happen. When you're worried about something that possibly could happen, you miss what's going on around you.

A terrorist senseless acts, mental instability and hate crimes could happen at any moment, anywhere in the world. You can stick you head in the sand like an ostrich and pretend it isn't happening, as long as it's not in your town, but you might be trampled by the life that is going on around you. To truly show these people that they can't win, that we can't be scared in submission, we need to continue living life and taking in the wonders, having new experiences and seeing what places have to offer. FDR stated it best,"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself." Fear will hold you back.

Don't let your parents, school, friends or your fear dictate your life. Find your inner traveler and get on that plane. Don't let your mind be consumed with horrifying scenarios that have yet to happen. Stare your fear down. There may be bumps in the road while you're studying abroad, but if you don't go, then you will never absorb another culture, meet new friends and make unforgettable memories. Build that brick wall around your fear, allowing your imagination, soul and physical being to travel. You may just find a new place you love, if you take a chance and open yourself up.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
