If you haven’t seen Disney’s "Moana," WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE?!
Moana is a strong young woman who represents this pivotal time in our lives as college students. Many of us love our family and friends who have a plan for us in their minds, while simultaneously feeling the need to break free from expectations and venture out to explore the world.
Watching this movie encouraged me to do the latter and “no one knows how far I’ll go.”
Please excuse the level of cheesy, yet encouraging positivity that is about to happen.
Moana was always special. Even as a child, everyone knew she had a bright future ahead of her. As Truman students, I’m sure many of us relate to that feeling. I bet you were one of the smart kids in high school and now your family is proud of you. Everyone is excited to see what we’ll do next.
But, just like Moana, we must listen to our hearts and the feelings inside telling us what direction to go. Let me give you an example:
Grandpa: Yeah, I think you should be a doctor.
Mom: I’m telling you, with the way you argue, you should be a lawyer.
Me: Don’t you want to know what I want to do?
Them: Sure, let’s hear it.
Me: I want to use my creative abilities to help and entertain people!
Them: Oh, well… okay.
My family doesn’t always understand how strongly I feel about what I want to do. They love and support me, but I know they would prefer it if I chose a path that was easier to predict. But we don’t always want to be on the predictable path, sometimes we want to get swallowed by the waves and have to save our cute little pig friend before we figure out how to navigate the choppy waters.
Moana’s love for her family probably hit home for a lot of people who watched the movie. Like many of us, her father was overprotective, her mother just wanted the best for her, and her grandmother was amazingly encouraging. The people in our lives who are like Moana’s crazy grandmother, are the people I think we should listen to. She had no hidden agenda or desire for Moana’s life, she simply saw the path that was meant for her, and helped her find it. So, remember, if your grandma is a little strange it’s okay, she probably knows what she’s talking about.
Remember when Moana took that boat and said, “Screw it, I’m going to go see what’s out there?” We have reached that point. So, take a deep breath, get on the boat, and go find your destiny friends.
