Is There Such A Thing As Being Too Serious?

Being too serious is just an insult people use when they don't know what they're doing.

In this generation I have been told that I am too serious by a lot of people. Whether that means that I am too serious with the way I think about things or I process my thoughts I'm not quite sure. I think people just throw that word around because they are too afraid to commit.

I'm the type of person that knows exactly what I want and I don't like wasting my time. I understand when people say I can't take a joke that I am too serious, obviously if your joke isn't funny I don't plan on laughing. But I don't think there is remotely anything wrong with knowing what I want and where I want to go in my life. Being serious means that you aren't trying to deceive people and you are going about your business efficiently. You don't have time for games and you are just focusing on the things you should be focusing on. Being serious means that you actually want to be genuine with people. Being serious is great and I don't understand why people even have the audacity to tell another person they are too serious. Too serious because you go about your life revealing your true self to others?

Too serious because you feel the need to show your actual self all the time? It makes no sense why people in our generations feel the need to tell people they're too serious because they are actually going about their lives the way they should be. I'm too serious apparently because when I tell people I like them I actually mean it. You're too serious if you want to be with someone that doesn't want to be with you. No, that person lied to you and is now saying you are too serious because they don't want to own up to their actions. Not sure what happened in our generation but that is absolutely insane to think about.

People make excuses and then throw their excuses as insults to others. Being serious is a great thing and I can't stress that enough. People will try to bring you down for knowing what you want but you can't let them. Knowing exactly where you want to go with a person or even where to go with your goals is so important and in no way is that a bad thing. Take your life seriously as you should, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
