A little competition doesn't hurt anybody, or does it? We see tons of sports prodigies competing against each other, authors competing to write up the most captivating novels to gather the most readers, and we even see graduates embellishing their resumes in order to compete for the best jobs. Many of us can agree that this kind of competition is relatively healthy, since we are usually emulating others who are very successful to become the best person we can be. However, competition that occurs at the expense of other people's lives does not seem to be very healthy or fair. This article is meant to very generally discuss this matter, and offer ideas in order to enlighten minds.
In American society, as most of us know, there is a devastatingly large income gap between the rich and the poor. There are multiple reasons for this, and it sure isn't mitigated by the fact that our economy is designed to create debt. As a society, we seem to be too cultured to take a stance against this issue. A lot of us believe that those who earn ridiculous amounts of money deserve every penny, and this belief holds us back. This belief makes us feel comfortable with our lives and the way our economic system is framed. We need to open our eyes and see that excessive competition in a way that produces immense income gaps, to the point that many individuals do not even earn enough to eat on a day to day basis is wrong. Competition in a capitalist society should not have to result in automatic debt with essentially no way out.
The one percent that obtain massive incomes have enough money to support multiple lives, but unfortunately, a lot of this money is not being used for such. Sure, there have been many philanthropists over the course of history, but it would be naive to assume that all of the rich use their immense amounts of money to provide relief for those in need. Let's open our eyes and keep this issue in our minds. Let's try and move toward a future in which economic competition is healthier one day.
