Not sure if i've been the only one who hasn't noticed this, but whenever you're in the grocery store take an extra look at the Honey Nut Cheerios cereal box! You will notice that Buzz, the bee mascot, on the cereal box is missing and there is a significant reason why. General Mills goal is to bring awareness of endangered pollinators, and the company even launched a new campaign called, "bring back the bees".
The advertisement General Mills has made public asks, "Where's Buzz the bee"? With the statement of, "Buzz is missing because there's something going on with the worlds bees. Bee populations everywhere have been declining at an alarming rate', and that includes honeybees like Buzz." A lot of other focus has been on celebrities, politics, and where everyone is planning to vacation that it has been completely blind to the world on what is happening to animals and insects. As people who rely on animals and insects for living supplies we should be caring a little more about them or not only will our environment be affected but some supplies can soon become unavailable.
According to Cosmopolitan, more than 30 percent of General Mills ingredients depend on pollination! In order for General Mills to continue making profit and help the bees, they are encouraging people to order wildflower seeds at zero cost. The goal is to plant at least 100 million seeds that will allow the bees to have a feast.
The director of marking for Cheerios, Susanne Prucha, stated, " As a General Mills cereal built around nutrition, helping pollinators get the key nutrition they need through fun, family-friendly activities like planting wildflowers is a natural fit." Planting wildflowers is one of many ways to help the bees. Other ways people can help is by building monuments, and do not use chemicals and pesticides to treat your lawn or garden. According to Quartz Media, a lot of bees ate pollen that was contaminated with fungicides which caused them to be affected by parasites. It is a little odd that this is happening to bees considering that fungicides were suppose to be harmless, but clearly something has switched up and scientist are still testing the cause that is killing our bees. Due to this scientist have placed labels on pesticides in order to warn farmers not to spray when pollinating bees.
General Mills will continue to do what they can to encourage more of their consumers to help out, if you still want to be eating those Honey Nut Cheerios in the morning be a helping hand to make a difference!
