Losing people is always hard. Losing loved ones is even harder. Believe me, I know, and during the holiday season, we are often reminded of memories we have with these loved ones. We find ourselves wishing that they were still here with us, that we could have them back for awhile. This year has been especially hard for me, personally, because I have had to face a lot of situations in which I find myself wishing my loved ones who have passed on were there. I find myself wondering if they can see me, if they take time out of their Heavenly agenda to check in on us down here on Earth.
Then, sometimes when it’s raining, I look up to the sky and remember an old Steve Wariner song… and I can’t help but crack a smile.
“There's holes in the floor of heaven, and her tears are pouring down. That's how you know she's watching, wishing she could be here now, and sometimes when i'm lonely, I remember she can see. Yes, there's holes in the floor of heaven and she's watching over you and me.”
You see, while there are days here on Earth that bring forth memories of those that have passed, and make us miss them all the more... there are also great days, days of accomplishment, days of happiness that I know my loved ones wouldn’t miss for the world. While they aren’t here on Earth anymore, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t here. They are here in their own special way. That random flash of heat on a hot day isn’t just the sun, it’s the laughter of my sister when I tell an old story she remembers all too well. The rain pouring down after finding out about an A on a test isn’t just precipitation, it’s my granddaddy’s happy tears because he saw how hard I worked for it. There are signs we have here on Earth that show us where they are, it’s just that more often than not we’re too busy to notice.
So, this holiday season, when your heart is heavy and you just can’t take it anymore… take a deep breath and look around. I’m sure you’ll find your loved ones somewhere. Someone’s presence in your life isn’t gone just because death took them away from you, because, well, there are holes in the floor of heaven… at least I sure like to think so.
