Friends is a comedic classic. Simple, done. Many people have newly discovered the show thanks to Netflix streaming. Luckily, my mom was a Friends fan since the day it aired on television. So, I grew up on watching Friends. My mom and I constantly joked that everything we learned in life, we learned from Friends.
1. Your first job as an adult isn't always going to be something glamorous
Rachel's first job was working at Central Perk as a waitress. Monica's was working as a waitress in a diner where she had to wear a wig and fake boobs. Joey was a struggling actor in plays. It's totally okay to start small. Eventually, these characters moved their way up into their dream jobs. Rachel ended up getting offered a job at Louis Vuitton in Paris. Monica owns her own restaurant and Joey is a somewhat recognized actor for his role as Drake Ramorye in Days of our Lives.
2. Pro and Con's Lists are great, unless they are about people.
Making a pro and con list to help you make a decision is a common way to help people figure out a problem. However, if you're trying to figure out whether you should be with someone, hold off. As the show exhibits, it is really hurtful and does not end well.
3. The easiest way to let someone know you like them know you like them is just to tell them.
Sounds crazy, right? In a generation where people are always trying to play it cool and act like they don't care, to actually go up to the person you have a thing for and tell them. Wow, what a concept. But trust me, it has been known to get the job done, especially if you start off with a pick up line like "how you doin'?"
4. True friends are always going to support your wacky ideas.
Whether it's deciding to change your name or bringing back the "college band", your friends have your back. They might laugh at/with you a little bit, but ultimately will support you through your craziest ideas.
5. If you really want to get to know someone, go for a "Day of Fun"
Janice and Joey needed to spend some quality time together when she was dating Chandler, so they had a Day of fun in the city. In the end, they may not have become best friends, but they still got to know each other a lot better and had an entertaining time doing it.
6. Never be too quick to judge
Friends has so many lessons packed into its 10 seasons, but thing that is prevalent through the entire season is trying to be a little less judgmental of those around you. Life throws a lot of curveballs at you and just because you left someone at the alter, been married 3 times, did a lipstick commercial in Tokyo, or lost your job because you hooked up with one of your massage clients, there is so much more to you than that.
7. There is always a silver lining
Friends often highlights the silver lining of things. As seen above, if the wedding ends up going badly, there is always cake. After a hard day of work, there is always a nice bubble bath calling your name. It might seem like there is nothing good about turning 30, but there are presents and alcohol to numb the pain.
8. Honesty is the best policy
It is okay to admit if you don't have a plan for you're life. Admit you don't want to help out with things. Honesty is great, especially if you are being honest with yourself. You aren't good at advice? That's okay, play on your strengths. Chandler knew that and was always ready to offer some sarcasm to uplift peoples moods instead. Phoebe was admitted if she could have anything in the world it would be world peace and bigger boobs. Being honest is a great quality to have.
9. Every relationship has its ups and downs
Whether it was Ross and Rachel, Monica and Chandler, or Phoebe and Mike, each relationship had their own ups and downs. Some definitely had more that others, but every relationship is different. However, when a relationship has a strong foundation and two people really care about each other, they can get through almost anything.
10. Friendship might be the best kind of love there is.
When you truly care about someone, you will do almost anything for them. You are willing to pee on them after they get stung by a jelly fish, go on a road trip to help them find their biological father, or help them scale the fire escape when you're both stuck on a roof. True friendship is not always about the big stuff, sometimes it is just about eating spaghetti together, watching tv in the recliner, and making forts.
