If Not Now, Then When?

Now is as good of a time as ever, so stop making excuses.

If Not Now, Then When?

Do you ever find yourself saying “one day I’m going to...”

But then what?

Days, weeks, months and years may go by and you still find yourself saying “one day,” but that now is just “not the right time.”

However, when is it ever going to be “the right time” to do whatever it is you say you want to do? Things will always pop up in life that put our ambitions on the back burner, but life is never going to press pause. Things will always seem to “get in the way” or you will always be “too busy,” but only if you believe that.

Life never stops happening, so you have to roll with it. Instead of letting it “just happen,” you have to make it happen. It is up to you to decide when you’re going to do things for yourself. It’s your call when to take a chance and do all the things you want to do in your life. The only thing stopping you from doing whatever you want is yourself.

Now, I’m sure some of you may not entirely agree with everything I’m saying. Sometimes, this whole “follow your dreams” concept can be unrealistic in some people’s eyes. Sure, time is of the essence and sometimes you don’t have as much of it as you need. However, all it takes is waking up one day and deciding you want to do something for yourself. It doesn’t need to be huge or life-changing, but it needs to be for you. The day you decide to do something for yourself is the first step in achieving whatever else it is you want to achieve.

I am a firm believer that you can obtain anything you set your mind to. For those of you who may not agree, why not? Maybe that’s just the way I was raised, or the way I view life as a Millennial, but ask yourself this; why can’t it be true? Hard work, dedication, persistence and confidence in your own success, in my opinion, is all it takes to reach whatever goals you set for yourself.

I aim to live my life every day with the intent of striving to do something that I have always wanted to do. Sometimes, opportunities will be thrown your way that make achieving your goals easy, within reach. However, other times, to get to where you want to be, or to get what you want, you have to work hard. So, why not do it.

Stop making excuses. Stop saying “I don’t have time for this” or “I can’t do that.” You can, you’re just setting yourself up for failure by not thinking so. Remember, this is your life. Yes, some things happen that will be out of your control, but there are so many more that are in it, so get out there and see just what you are capable of. I promise that you might even surprise yourself.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
