36 Things Theater Majors Know To Be True

I think people have different misconceptions about what theatre majors actually do, and think that ours and other creative majors are easy majors. They are so wrong about that. We really do work hard, but we also are going for something that we love so it doesn’t feel like work. No matter how much criticism we get, theatre majors know these things as truth:

1. As theatre majors, we work our butts off balancing, our rehearsal schedules, personal lives, and our regular classes.

2. Just because we picked a major we love does not make it a easy major. We are required to go to classes,do tests, and homework like any other major. While also being expected to be apart of a show each semester in some way, shape or form.

3. Free time outside rehearsals are spent, running lines, looking over blocking ,and talking about the show.

4. We are always singing, but we need to so we feel prepared for our next audition.

5. Our production team is always working outside the play or musical to make sure we put out the best possible show.

6. Tech week is worse than you could imagine

7. We don’t sleep much.
8. We scramble to find time just to grab a bite to eat between rehearsal and homework.

9. We have to work harder to have a social life outside of our department.

10. Our major takes up ALL OF OUR TIME!!!

11. We have to be able to sing, dance, and act, along with other skills.

12. We are expected to know all of our lines by heart in a short amount of time.

13. YOU MUST KNOW WHO LIN MANUEL MIRANDA IS AND THE BEAUTY OF HAMILTON.

14. You must be prepared for a sing along session at any given moment.

15. We really don’t sleep much!!!

16. We have to prioritize our time down to a T!

17. Unless you’re dying or dead you better be at rehearsal on time!

18. You got to keep up with what is going on out in the theatre world.

19. KNOW ALL THE DISNEY SONGS!

20. Stay in shape.

21. Our appearance actually does matter for every audition and career.

22. We go to our regular classes all day and then still have to be at rehearsal.

23. Rehearsal sometimes won’t let out till after 11 p.m.

24. We are vulnerable in front of an audience.

25. We wear our hearts on our sleeves.

26. Don’t mess with our tech crews.

27. Auditions take up hours of free time.

28. When we say have rehearsal, we're not blowing you off, we just want to put on the best show out there.

29. We miss a lot of time with family and non-theatre friends because of shows.

30. We know how to stay calm even when everything is going wrong.

31. We know how to take criticism.

32. It is emotional saying goodbye after the final show because we know we might never work with that same cast of people again.

33. We have to know how to be creative for a project even when our minds are drawing blanks.

34. Our department is our family no matter how much we fight with them.

35. We would not trade the tech weeks, the costumes, the songs and dances, the scripts, the lost nights of sleep, and the casts for anything else in the world.

36. We picked our major because it’s something we love.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
