Understandably, many people in the country are very upset right now. In case you missed everything that has happened this week, the United States just decided to elect a racist, homophobic, xenophobic, sexist piece of trash to be the President of the United States. In case you haven’t figured it out, I am not a fan of Donald Trump, and I won’t be for a while. He threatens to rights of black people, Muslim people, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, women, etc. While he is in office, and his hate spewing mindset is considered acceptable to part of the country, I will feel unsafe.
Ever since the election I have been seeing a constant stream of people on social media discussing how they’ve already been harassed, and even physically threatens or attacked. Trump isn’t even in office yet, but now the racists think that they finally have the power to threaten everyone who doesn’t fit they’re standard. I’ve so heartbroken by how many people feel unsafe in a country that used to feel like home. Every time I see a post about a Muslim woman not wearing her hijab in fear of being attacked, or a black person showing the N-word written all over their property, I sadly see the direction our country is going at the moment, and it isn’t a good path.
However, it amazes me how many people are protesting, or writing to their electors to change the votes. People are not going to stop fighting for the country we know we should have. Young people are over the world are protesting at every college, in every city, at any time. When looking at the voting statistics, Clinton had a clear advantage to Trump in almost every state within the younger generation. They understand the severity of this issue, and in the years to come, we will hopefully be able to make the correct choice.
We may have lost this election, but we are the future. Soon we can make the change to start heading in the right direction.
